Earth to Earth
I believe that our stuff should be able to outlive us if cared for, but should easily return to the earth when no longer needed, creating no harm along the way.
This is the first garment and installation of what I hope becomes a whole collection of wearable items, crafted from natural fibres and coloured using natural dyes, decorated in stitches and sewn together by hand; returning to the earth. Created using only natural fibre fabrics and threads (cotton, silk, linen, wool), with no fastenings or notions which are not crafted from natural materials. These beautifully crafted clothes, naturally dyed in shades of pink (cochineal), orange (madder), purple (logwood) and yellow (weld) are fully compostable. I wish to exhibit these clothes starting to decompose.
I will be creating and destroying them to illustrate the importance of considering the full life cycle of a garment or product at its inception.
